The Gift of Health

Mom’s Penny Thought: “Health is Wealth. Without the former, the latter is meaningless”.

My mother believed in whole foods made by nature, not foods wholly made by man. She considered factory food the root of all ailment (this is decades before the notion started to gain some traction in main-stream thinking).

Accordingly, no box of cereal, stick of margarine or can of soup EVER crossed the threshold of her pantry. Instead we had oatmeal or barley porridge, butter from the farm and home-made bone-broth soup. Food was never a convenience, it was always medicine, both preventative and curative. With the added bonus that cooking from scratch is very cost-effective: a boon to her inner frugalista.

I admit, when I was little, I felt somewhat deprived when coca cola remained resolutely banned from the house (until I saw what it can do to a piece of cloth left soaking in it overnight). Mostly though, I appreciated the amazing goodness of the food she shared. Eventually, I grew up to become a holistic health coach, so now I pass my mother's wisdom along to anyone who wants to hear (and sometimes, those who don't).

I'm not proposing that a healthy diet will cure all ills, but surely it’s a fabulous start, and it saves money in the process.
